Under-Eye Hollows & Dark Circles

The area under the eye is among the thinnest skin on the body, which makes it easy to look tired. A hollow tear trough casts a shadow. Thin skin shows blood vessels as a purple tint. Pigment can make a brown cast, common in deeper skin tones. Swollen fat pads create bags. Each cause needs a different answer, and the wrong one can make the area look worse.

Common causes

  • Volume loss and bone changes deepen the tear trough
  • Thin skin shows underlying vessels and muscle
  • Pigment from genetics, sun, rubbing or allergy
  • Fat pad bulging and fluid retention cause puffiness
  • Sleep loss, allergy and dehydration add to the appearance

How doctors usually approach it

Hollow shadow: filler
Hyaluronic acid filler placed carefully softens the groove. This is delicate work near the eye, with risks of lumps, bluish tint, swelling and rare vascular complications.
Thin crepey skin: boosters and PRP
Polynucleotide, NCTF-type and PRP treatments aim to improve thickness and quality of the skin. Effects are gradual and mild.
Vascular tint: circulation-focused options
Carboxytherapy is used to improve circulation-related darkness with modest results, and some light-based approaches are used selectively.
Pigment: tone-focused care
Topical brightening and gentle treatments are discussed. Strong energy near the eye needs great care.
What does not help
Filler on pigment-based circles or on prominent bags can worsen the look. Eye creams alone seldom change a structural hollow.

Matching dark circles to the right treatment family

A simple check is to look in the mirror while shining a light from above and then from below. If the darkness shifts or lessens with the light, it is a shadow, and volume is the issue. If it stays the same color, it is pigment or vessels.

Many people have more than one cause, which is why a single approach often disappoints. A doctor may recommend improving skin quality first, then adding volume only if a shadow remains.

Because of the nearby eye and blood vessels, choose an experienced injector, ask what product will be used, and know the plan if a complication occurs.

Under-Eye Hollows & Dark Circles: common questions

Is under-eye filler safe?

It is widely performed but has specific risks, including swelling, lumps and rare serious vascular problems. Technique and anatomy knowledge are critical.

Why do my dark circles look worse after filler?

Too much product or poor placement can cause puffiness or a bluish tint. A dissolving enzyme can reverse hyaluronic acid filler.

Can sleep fix them?

It can reduce puffiness and tiredness, but structural hollows and pigment usually persist.
