Lip Filler
Lip filler is a narrow, contour-focused treatment. This page explains what it can adjust, how it differs from filler elsewhere on the face, and why it is not the answer to dryness or fine lines around the mouth on its own.
How it works
A hyaluronic acid gel designed for soft, mobile tissue is injected into the lips to increase volume, define the border or refine the shape of the cupid's bow. Because lips are highly vascular and move constantly, products used here are typically soft and flexible. Fine needles or cannulas place small amounts in layers. The result is visible immediately, though swelling can make lips look larger for the first days before settling. The gel is gradually absorbed and may need repeating to maintain the look.
Who it may suit
- Thin lips or uneven volume between the upper and lower lip
- A blurred lip border or flattened cupid's bow
- Mild loss of lip volume with age
- People who prefer a modest, adjustable change they can build on in stages
The treatment day
- Discussion of proportion. The doctor considers the ratio of upper to lower lip, your smile and your face shape before agreeing on a target.
- Numbing. Numbing cream is applied and left to work before injection.
- Gradual placement. Small amounts are placed in stages, with pauses to check symmetry and shape.
- Review and cooling. Ice is applied and the doctor reviews the shape with you.
Aftercare
- Avoid pressing on the lips and avoid kissing for a day or so
- Use cold compresses gently for swelling
- Skip intense exercise, hot drinks and alcohol for the first day
- Contact the doctor urgently for severe pain, blanching or dark discoloration of the lip
Things to know first
- Swelling, bruising and lumpiness are common for several days
- Cold sore history can lead to a flare-up after injection; tell the doctor so preventive medication can be considered
- Vascular occlusion is a rare but serious risk because of the rich blood supply of the lips
- Overfilling can look unnatural and affect speech or smile movement
- Not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with active infection or an open sore on or near the lips
How lip filler compares with nearby options
Within the filler family, lips behave differently from cheeks or chin. They need softer gels and much smaller amounts, and the margin for visible error is narrower. Gels used for deep structure are generally not appropriate here, which is why the product type matters more than the brand name.
Compared with a skin booster, lip filler changes shape and volume, while a hydrating booster, if used around the mouth, aims at fine surface texture and moisture. If your main worry is dry, lined lips or vertical lines above the upper lip, a booster or a gentle resurfacing option may be discussed instead of volume.
Compared with botulinum toxin, a very small dose in the muscle around the mouth is sometimes used to soften downturned corners or a gummy smile, which is a different problem from lip size. Collagen stimulators are generally not used in the lips, so volume here is realistically a hyaluronic acid decision.
Lip Filler: common questions
Will my lips look swollen for long?
Swelling is usually most noticeable in the first days and settles over about a week, though it varies by person. The final shape is judged after it has gone down.
Can filler treat lip lines?
Volume can soften some lines, but fine vertical lines are often addressed with boosters, resurfacing or toxin. A doctor can say which is more suitable.
Can I get cold sores after treatment?
If you are prone to them, injection can trigger an outbreak. Tell the doctor beforehand.
How soon can I repeat it?
Usually after the swelling has fully settled and the doctor has seen the result, then maintained as the gel is absorbed.
