Unwanted Hair
Unwanted hair on the face, underarms, legs or bikini line can be managed with shaving, waxing, creams, electrolysis or laser. Laser light works by being absorbed by pigment in the hair, so hair color and skin tone decide the outcome. Hair that appears suddenly or in a male-like pattern on the face and body may relate to hormones and deserves a medical check.
Common causes
- Genetics and ethnicity influence density and color
- Hormonal conditions can increase coarse hair growth
- Some medications stimulate hair growth
- Hair cycles mean only some hairs are active at any time
- Ingrown hairs from shaving or waxing add irritation
How doctors usually approach it
- Dark hair on lighter skin: diode or alexandrite laser
- These wavelengths are absorbed strongly by hair pigment. A course of sessions reduces density and thickness for many people.
- Dark hair on deeper skin: longer wavelength
- Nd:YAG lasers pass through skin pigment more safely. Settings are conservative and sessions may be more numerous.
- Light, gray or red hair: electrolysis
- Electrolysis treats each follicle individually regardless of color, and suits small areas such as the chin or eyebrows.
- Hormonal growth: medical evaluation
- A doctor may investigate causes and prescribe treatment alongside hair removal.
- What does not help
- Waxing and plucking between laser sessions remove the hair root and reduce the target. Home light devices vary in strength and are not equal to clinic lasers.
Matching unwanted hair to the right treatment family
Contrast is the key variable. Dark hair against pale skin gives the laser a clear target. As skin deepens or hair lightens, the margin narrows, and the choice shifts to longer wavelengths or non-laser methods.
Area matters as well. Large areas such as the legs suit laser for the speed. Small, fine, light hairs on the face often suit electrolysis better, and some people use both.
Because hair grows in cycles, expect a course spread across months, followed by occasional maintenance. Hair that regrows is usually finer and sparser.
Unwanted Hair: common questions
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people feel a snap or warmth, and sensitive areas feel more. Cooling and numbing cream may help.
Can I tan between sessions?
Tanning raises the chance of burns and color changes with laser. Sun avoidance is usually advised throughout the course.
Is it safe on the face?
It can be, with care around the eyes and attention to hormonal causes. A doctor can advise on suitability.
