How it works

PicoWay, made by Candela, is a picosecond laser. Picosecond pulses deliver energy in an extremely short time, so the effect on pigment is mainly photoacoustic rather than thermal. Pigment particles are intended to break into smaller fragments that the body clears gradually. The system offers more than one wavelength, which lets the operator choose light that matches the color of the pigment or tattoo ink being treated.

Where PicoSure is defined by a single wavelength, PicoWay is positioned around having several. For pigment, that matters most with colored tattoo ink, but it can also influence how superficial or deep the pigment target is. The practical point is that wavelength selection broadens what one device can address.

Compared with Discovery Pico, which pairs picosecond and Q-switched modes, PicoWay is built around picosecond delivery. Compared with a Q-switched laser, picosecond pulses are shorter and shift more of the effect to shock rather than heat. For superficial brown spots, scars and tattoos, the differences matter less than the skill of the person choosing settings.
