Skin Botox (Microbotox)
Skin Botox is a technique name rather than a separate drug, which leads to a lot of confusion about what it is for. This page explains how it differs from standard botulinum toxin and from skin boosters, and which concerns it may or may not help.
How it works
Instead of treating a deep muscle, the doctor places highly diluted botulinum toxin in many tiny points within the upper skin layers. The idea is that the toxin may reduce the activity of nearby oil glands and the small muscles attached to hair follicles, which may make pores look less prominent and the skin surface look smoother and less shiny. Because the dose per point is low, facial expression is usually preserved. Evidence for its effect on pores and oil is still limited and results vary by person, so expectations should stay modest.
Who it may suit
- Oily-looking skin with visible pores in the T-zone or cheeks
- Fine, shallow surface lines and slightly rough skin texture
- People who want smoother skin without reducing facial expression
- Those who have not responded to topical products for shine and pore appearance
The treatment day
- Skin assessment. The doctor checks oiliness, pore size, existing lines and any history of reactions to injectables.
- Numbing. Numbing cream is applied for a period before the session.
- Micro-injections. Diluted toxin is placed in many tiny, shallow points across the chosen area.
- Calming. The skin is cleansed and soothed, and sunscreen is applied.
Aftercare
- Avoid heavy make-up for several hours so the tiny injection points can close
- Do not rub or massage the treated skin for the first day
- Avoid intense exercise, sauna and heated treatments for a day or two
- Use sunscreen and a gentle moisturizer
Things to know first
- Small bumps, redness and bruising may appear and generally fade in days
- If injected too deeply or too widely, the toxin can affect facial muscles and cause a stiff or uneven expression
- Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions
- Results for pores and oil are modest and temporary, and some people notice little change
- It does not treat acne scars, volume loss or loose skin
How skin Botox compares with nearby options
Compared with standard botulinum toxin, the target is different. Standard dosing relaxes a muscle to soften a movement line. Skin Botox works near the surface and is not intended to change how you move. If your concern is a frown line, standard dosing is the relevant option; if it is shine and pore appearance, this technique may be discussed.
Compared with skin boosters, it contains no hydrating or regenerative ingredient. A booster aims to improve moisture and skin quality, while skin Botox aims at oil and pore behavior. Someone whose skin is oily and enlarged-pored may find it more relevant, whereas someone with dry, dull skin is more likely to be pointed toward a booster.
For pores that look stretched because of scars or lost firmness, collagen stimulators or energy devices are more commonly considered. A doctor may suggest combining approaches over time, and may also advise a peel or acne care if blackheads are the main driver of visible pores.
Skin Botox (Microbotox): common questions
Will it freeze my face?
The doses are intentionally low and shallow, so expression is usually preserved. Spread to deeper muscles is possible if the technique is poor, which is why the choice of doctor matters.
Does it shrink pores for good?
No. Any change in pore appearance is temporary and varies by person; pore size is partly genetic.
Is it the same as regular Botox?
The ingredient is of the same kind, but the dilution, depth and goal differ.
How often is it repeated?
Often every few months, based on how long the effect lasts for you.
