Fat-Dissolving Injection

How it works

Fat-dissolving injections contain a compound that disrupts the membranes of fat cells in the injected area. The cells break down and the body clears the contents over the following weeks. Because the cells are removed rather than shrunk, the treated area is expected to hold less fat afterward. The treatment is aimed at small, localized pockets, such as submental fullness under the chin. Several sessions spaced weeks apart are often needed. It reduces fat only; it does not tighten the overlying skin, so people with significant looseness may see little improvement or a slack look.

Who it may suit

• A small, pinchable pocket of fat under the chin
• Localized fullness along the jowl or jawline where fat is the main cause
• People who prefer an injectable over surgery for a limited area
• Those with reasonably elastic skin who can tolerate several days of swelling

The treatment day

1. Fat versus other causes. The doctor checks whether the fullness is fat, muscle, loose skin or bone position, usually by pinching and observing movement.
2. Marking. The treatment area is marked in a grid to keep injections in the intended zone and away from important structures.
3. Small injections. Multiple small injections are placed into the fat layer using a fine needle.
4. Cooling and guidance. Ice is applied and you receive guidance on swelling and when to return for another session.

Aftercare

• Expect firm swelling that can peak in the first days; cold compresses may be advised
• Avoid strenuous exercise and heat for a few days
• Sleep with the head slightly raised for the first nights
• Report severe pain, skin blistering, difficulty swallowing, or any facial weakness at once

Things to know first

• Marked swelling, bruising, tenderness and numbness in the area can last days to weeks
• Injury to a small nerve along the jaw can cause temporary uneven smile or weakness, and rare skin damage or ulceration has been reported
• Results depend on the amount of fat and may require several sessions, and the effect is not suitable for large volumes
• Pregnancy, breastfeeding, an infection nearby, trouble swallowing or some neck conditions rule it out
• Loose skin may appear more obvious after fat reduction

How fat-dissolving injection compares with nearby options

Before choosing, work out what makes the lower face feel heavy. If you can pinch a pocket under the chin, fat is involved, and an injection is the straightforward comparison. If the width comes from the chewing muscle at the corner of the jaw, botulinum toxin is the more appropriate tool. If the issue is skin that has slackened and descended, ultrasound, radiofrequency or thread-based lifting address laxity, which fat reduction does not.

Energy-based devices that reduce fat or tighten tissue have a gentler recovery but may deliver a more modest change per session. Surgery-based fat removal can address larger volumes but comes with a longer recovery and a different risk profile. Injection sits in the middle: a firmer swelling period than most devices, and no surgery.

Fillers move in the opposite direction. They add definition to a weak chin or jawline, and some people combine fat reduction with structural support so the lower face is balanced rather than simply smaller.
